Axarquía, Andalucía

Andalucía is the southern most part of Spain and the part of the Iberian peninsula that is most quintessentially Spanish. Few places in the world can boast such a wealth of natural wonders in so compact an area. Just a few kilometres inland, in contrast to the sun drenched beaches of the Costa del Sol, you'll encounter the timeless Spain of white villages.

The Axarquía region (bounded by the coast, the Sierra de Tejeda to the north and, on its eastern side, the mountainous edge of the province of Granada) offers a real taste of Spain.

With some of the best weather in Europe and abundant wildlife, as well as incredible scenery and a host of attractive mountain villages, this region is ideal for walkers in the cooler winter months.

If you're a sun seeker why not visit during the sizzling heat of the summer months. There's no better place to soak up the sun and the local wines!

The Axarquía region is a great place to bring the whole family. Why not visit during one of the local festivals. There's always something going on from weekly street markets to processions and festivals with food, music and dancing.

The local area

The following descriptions tell you a little about the villages where we have properties to rent.

Algarrobo Costa

Having undergone a recent face lift, Algarrobo Costa lies along a wide, sandy beach stretching from Torrox Costa to Torre del Mar. There are many sea-front restaurants and bars to choose from.

Canillas de Albaida

Canillas de Albaida

Just a few minutes drive from Cómpeta, Canillas de Albaida is a traditional white village. Tucked away in the mountains on the edge of the National Park, it has access to many varied and interesting walks. There is also a good swimming pool for those who want a more relaxing holiday.

Cómpeta

Reached via winding mountain roads, only 75 minutes from Málaga airport and 30 minutes from the coast, Cómpeta is a huddle of brilliant white houses tumbling down the mountainside, surrounded by vineyards. A Moorish settlement in origin, Cómpeta is now famous for its wine, friendly Spanish atmosphere and the beautiful mountains surrounding it.

competa axarquia andalucia spain

With its restaurants, cafés and bars, as well as shops selling wine, antiques, ceramics and local honey, Cómpeta is an ideal base for walking in the mountains, sightseeing, travelling inland to Granada and the lake district, taking a trip to Gibraltar or lazing on the beach!

frigiliana

Frigiliana

Just 7km north of Nerja is the typical pueblo blanco of Frigiliana which sits high on a mountain ridge overlooking the sea with spectacular panoramic views. Voted the 'prettiest village in Andalucía' by the Spanish tourism authority, Frigiliana is a tangle of narrow cobbled streets lined by whitewashed houses, their wrought-iron balconies filled with planters of brilliant red geraniums.

Small plazas provide shady seating while the village bars are popular with visitors who come here to taste the locally produced wine. There are also several excellent shops selling pottery and ceramics, including decorative plates with their distinctive Arab design.

Nerja

Nerja was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 12,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII, who's statue now takes price of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa.

There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too you can take advantage of the water sports on offer. Just outside Nerja is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory, but is now used to carry water to local farms. The Nerja caves are some of the most famous in Spain.
periana

Periana

Situated at 547 metres above sea level, there are excellent views from the town down towards lake Vinuela and the sea beyond, best seen from the viewing point near the new town hall. Dominating the scenery around Periana is Mount Maroma. At some 2080 metres (6,800 feet) it is the largest mountain in Malaga province.

A particularly pretty spot is the place where the river Guaro is begins. Another place to be visited is the spa at Baños de Vilo, built in 1823 and later abandoned. The sulphurous waters of the spa, which is currently being renovated prior to reopening, are apparently very beneficial. Also excellent are the two important examples of local agriculture and of Periana's economy, peaches and olive oil. The fame of these two products has travelled far beyond regional confines.

Salares

The brilliant white village of Salares is a centre of olive oil and wine production and one of the most picturesque villages of the Axarquía. Its charms are enhanced by the banning of traffic from its narrow streets, where colourful potted geraniums line the walls. A great place to stay for those wanting to get away from it all.

sayalonga history

Sayalonga

Tucked away in the mountains, 10km from the coast and 7km from Cómpeta, Sayalonga is a cluster of brilliant white houses, retaining the feel of an authentic Andalucían village. With it's pretty square and recently built swimming pool it's a great base for travelling further up into the mountains or spending days on the beach.

Torrox and Torrox Costa

Overlooking the Mediterranean, the 11th century village of Torrox is a typical white-washed village with many steep streets and pretty squares. Protected from the north winds by the Tejeda and Almijara mountains the average temperature sees little difference between winter and summer. It is for this that Torrox boasts having 'the best climate in Europe'.

torrox costa

Torrox Costa (4km from Torrox Pueblo) offers a more lively atmosphere with its beautiful, clean stretch of sand, promenade, bars, restaurants and shops. Remains of a Roman village can be seen under a glass viewing platform (near to the lighthouse).

Please note that this is rural Spain, although main roads are good country roads can be narrow and winding with some being unsurfaced.
